Level 2 and Level 3 Tests in English, general proficiency examinations at Levels B1, B2 and C1 in the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) respectively, were developed by the staff of St Petersburg University, specialists in the field of testology.
The purpose of the tests is to measure the language proficiency of candidates at Levels B1, B2 and C1 in the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
The tests are aimed at
- assessing the level of candidates’ ability to understand various audio-texts of different genres showing their understanding of gist, eliciting specific information and detailed comprehension;
- assessing the level of candidates’ ability to do the writing paper, consisting of communicative tasks of various types and genres;
- assessing the level of candidates’ ability to read various texts of different genres for different purposes (for gist, eliciting specific information, and detailed comprehension);
- assessing the level of candidates’ skills to apply their knowledge of lexical and grammatical systems of the language to complete communicative tasks;
- assessing the level of candidates’ ability to perform communicative tasks of various types.
Test sessions
An applicant who has successfully passed the test gets a certificate which is taken into account when applying to St Petersburg University for Graduate programmes and Doctoral programmes.

Registration procedure
Please note that remote registration is available. The registration procedure is as follows:
You will need to select a testing date from the schedule of test sessions and complete the online application form.
Please fill in the form with care. We recommend that you spell your full name in the Latin transliteration as shown on your international passport. The application is automatically sent to the Language Testing Centre administrator. After your application has been processed by the Language Testing Centre administrator, we will send you an agreement, bank details for you to arrange payment for the test, and further instructions.
All incoming applications are processed by the Language Testing Centre manually; therefore, the waiting time for a response is up to 2 days. If you have not received a reply to your application in good time, please contact us by phone: +7 (812) 363-64-06.
Note! After emailing the signed documents and the payment receipt to the Language Testing Centre, make sure to check your email box for the acknowledgement email confirming that we have received all your documents. If you have not received the acknowledgement email within 2-3 business days, please contact us by telephone.

You can prepare for the SPbU Certification Test in English through courses at the School of Translation and Foreign Languages at St Petersburg University.
