About the ‘St Petersburg University Online School’ project

‘St Petersburg University Online School’ is a unique educational project, the only one of its kind in Russian so far. Its main objectives are: promoting the Russian language and culture and generating interest among young people abroad in receiving education in the Russian Federation. The Online School offers a unique opportunity for school students from overseas to study subjects from the Russian school curriculum under the guidance of the leading teachers from St Petersburg University free of charge.

The ‘St Petersburg University Online School’ project was launched in summer 2018 in Riga, Latvia. Within the framework of the project, international students could study remotely three subjects: Russian language, Russian literature, History of Russia. Currently, the number of students and the geography of participating countries are constantly growing. While only school students from Latvia took part in the first St Petersburg University Online School term, in the next Online School year they were joined by students from: Estonia, Spain and Kazakhstan. This year, online classes are also attended by students from Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

To date, over 1,500 school students have participated in the project!

Educational programme

In 2018, the St Petersburg University Online School offered refresher courses in three subjects from the Russian high school curriculum: Russian language; Russian literature, and History of Russia. Later, new courses were added: mathematics, civics and geography. The lecture series are targeted at final years high school students (school years 10-12).

Since 2020, taking into account the high demand, the St Petersburg University Online School curriculum has been broadened and diversified. We introduced a new educational track targeted at secondary school students of school years 6-9. This track includes lessons in the following subjects: biology; physics; mathematics; geography; history; literature; and Russian language.

The Online School aims to help school students from overseas to:

• deepen their knowledge;
• broaden their outlook;
• get a unique learning experience;
• better prepare for studying in Russia.

Students who successfully complete the course are awarded a certificate issued by St Petersburg University, thus gaining bonus points for enrolment / admission to St Petersburg University.
